Jake Carlson is a business leader, an inspirational speaker, and a 9-5 dropout. After 11 years as a tax attorney, he chose “different”. Taking his three kids out of school for the adventure of a lifetime, the family spent a year living in 12 countries from Bagan, Myanmar to Paris, France, overcoming robbery, red-eye flights and Haggis while learning to love the rich cultures of the world. All of which he expected.

What he didn’t expect was the journey of Leadership this decision would create. From the high-rises of London to the nipa huts of Malaysia, the need for strong leadership is everywhere. But where are the leaders? Jake is on a mission to help Elite Achievers become leaders by mastering the CIA of Influence: Conviction, Irresistibility & Accountability.

Move the Chains

Technology is a wonderful thing — until it turns into a nightmare. While traveling through the Philippines, Jake had his laptop stolen in the middle of the night. “Imagine someone stealing your entire office — your entire work,” Jake recalls. “That’s what happened to me. It was the worst feeling in the world.”

Touchdown!

While attending a conference on podcasting, Jake Carlson had the good fortune to find himself seated at a table with big names in the podcasting world. When one of them asked him what his biggest struggle with podcasting was, Jake said that getting big names on his show was a Catch-22. “To get big names, you have to have a big show. But in order to get a big show, you need big names,” he said. His mentor looked at him and said, “Sometimes all you have to do is ask! You’d be surprised how many of those ‘big names’ will say yes.”

Jake followed this advice, got a big name on his show — and realized in hindsight that getting the big name on his show wasn’t the win. The win was going through the experience of asking the big name and in turn, stepping beyond his comfort zone and becoming better for it.
